In India, an ancient herb called neem has been used for literally thousands of years to treat practically every ailment or health concern under the sun — including hair loss. Neem is available in a number of different forms from powders and twigs to extracts and oils. It is the neem oil for hair that we’ll look at more closely today.
What is Neem?
By all accounts it is a wonder plant, humorously called “the village pharmacy” for its ability to treat the body inside and out. The leaves, bark and seeds of the neem tree, or Azadirachta indica, are used to create countless remedies. The flowers are consumed as vegetables. Even its twigs are beneficial — they are commonly used still in India to “brush” teeth.
Neem is extremely high in antioxidants and essential fatty acids, it kills bacteria, is an analgesic, boosts the immune system, promotes circulation, has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, it treats a variety of skin conditions including dryness, acne, psoriasis and eczema, it purifies and removes toxins, is a natural pesticide, including for head lice, it helps with diabetes, digestion and periodontal disease. And these are just some of the neem benefits!
Neem oil for hair fortifies the keratin in hair, makes it healthy and shiny, prevents graying and has been used for millennia in India and other parts of Asia to help regrow hair. Use of neem oil can promote the growth of thicker, darker and stronger hair and can even trigger regrowth.
How to Use Neem Oil for Hair
- Get a high-quality bottle of neem oil. (Here is one we like.) Massage a few drops into your scalp and leave in for 20 minutes to an hour or even overnight. You may use it straight or mix it with a little jojoba oil, coconut oil or castor oil. You may also want to add a drop or two of an essential oil such as lavender or peppermint, or anything that smells good to you. And that’s because neem oil has a very pungent aroma that some people just don’t like.
- Apply a tiny amount of neem oil for hair, straight or mixed with another oil, from roots to ends. Neem strengthens and nourishes hair, so if your hair is dry and damaged, it will really lap it up.
- Add neem oil for hair to shampoo and conditioner. Mix about half an ounce of neem oil into eight ounces of shampoo or conditioner, then use as normal. To start, make only a small amount of neem oil shampoo or conditioner at a time. Or you can make it in the shower by mixing a few drops of neem oil for hair in your hand with your shampoo or conditioner (or both, for that matter).
Unlike other forms of neem such as teas and extracts, neem oil should not be ingested — it’s for external use only!
